Supporting your senior through their portrait session is an exciting milestone, and a little preparation goes a long way toward creating a relaxed, confidence‑boosting experience. This guide walks you through what to expect, how to help your senior prepare, and how to make the most of your session day.
Senior portraits today are far more natural and personalized than the stiff studio photos many parents remember. Sessions are relaxed, outdoors, and designed to highlight your senior’s personality. I will guide them through natural posing and easy prompts, so they never feel awkward or unsure. Sessions last 60 minutes and include multiple backgrounds and an optional outfit change.
Encourage your senior to pick 1-2 outfits that feel comfortable, confident, and true to their style. Solid colors, simple patterns, and fitted clothing photograph best. Make sure everything is clean, wrinkle‑free, and ready to go the night before. For outfit styling tips visit my What to Wear for Senior Pictures page.
Haircuts should be done **1–2 weeks before** the session so they look natural. Makeup should enhance not hide their features. Nails should be neatly filed and clean. Help them avoid sunburns, especially a month before the session - tan lines cannot be edited.
If your senior has hobbies, sports, or interests they want to include, feel free to bring small props, letterman jackets, musical instruments, sports gear, or meaningful accessories.

What Parents Should Bring:
I will guide your senior through the entire process with natural posing and simple direction. We’ll rotate through the different onsite backgrounds and make sure they feel relaxed and confident. Most seniors warm up quickly, and by the end, they’re having fun and feeling great.
You’re welcome to join us during the session, or you can relax nearby, whatever makes your senior feel most comfortable. Be prepared to jump in for a photo or two!

You’ll receive a curated online client gallery of beautifully edited images. From there, you can select favorites for yearbook submissions, prints, wall art, or graduation announcements for purchase. Packages and a la carte options are available. I’m always happy to help with recommendations.
- Avoid scheduling sports, rehearsals, or long practices right before the session
- Steam or iron clothes the night before - bring them on hangers and in a garment bag if possible
- Plan extra time so no one feels rushed
- Encourage your senior to get a good night’s sleep
- Remind them to stay hydrated and eat beforehand
- Keep the mood light for a fun session - encourage them to ask questions if they have any
Senior portraits celebrate who your teen is right now this moment between childhood and adulthood. With a little preparation and a relaxed mindset, the session becomes a meaningful, confidence‑boosting experience they’ll remember long after graduation.
